about Robert Brindley R.S.M.A.

Robert is a member of the prestigious Royal Society of Marine Artists (R.S.M.A.). His work can be seen at the Mall Galleries, London, at their annual exhibition and with other members throughout the country, in marine related shows.

He shows work in London at the Mall Galleries, with the Royal Society of Marine Artists (R.S.M.A.), the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (R.O.I.) and previously at the Carisbrook Gallery, London with the Guild of Aviation Artists (G.Av.A.).

In 1993 Robert exhibited for the first time with the Royal Society of Marine Artists and in November 1997 he was elected a member and was subsequently featured on Tyne Tees Television's "A Day In The Life Of ..." series.

He is the current Archivist for the Society.

It has been primarily because of this exclusive membership that Robert's work hangs in exhibitions with many of the country's leading artists and has come to the attention of some prominent collectors, which has enhanced his already established reputation.

Born in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire in 1949, Robert worked in the Structural Engineering field as a Computer Aided Design Manager until 1992 when he moved to Whitby, North Yorkshire to paint full time. Since 2019, Robert lives in Cumbria.

Working in Watercolour, Oil, and Pastel, Robert's inspiration is the challenge of capturing light and atmosphere in a contemporary impressionistic style.

He paints, mainly landscape and coastal scenery, around his home in Cumbria and on painting trips to North Yorkshire, Cornwall, the South Coast, Wales, Scotland and further afield in Venice, Greece, France and India.

Although primarily a landscape artist, Robert occasionally paints interiors and figurative subjects. As always, Robert strives to reproduce the quality of light in the chosen subject.

Robert holds Solo Exhibitions and occasionally demonstrates & tutors Workshops for Art Societies and painting groups in watercolours, oils and pastels.

Robert's first book, entitled Painting Boats & Coastal Scenery  was published by Crowood Press in August 2009 and Painting in Pastels in September 2010. Painting Landscapes in Oils was published in February 2012. Signed copies are available from our secure online shop

A regular contributer to The Artist Magazine, his work has also been featured in several publications, including The International Arrtist, The Artist & Illustrator, Pratique des Arts, Paint & Draw, Yorkshire Life, Yorkshire Today, 'How to paint Watercolour Landscapes from Photographs' and the Dalesman to name but a few.

Robert's DVDs produced by Townhouse Films; 'Successful Summer Landscapes In Watercolour', 'Painting Atmospheric Watercolour Landscapes', 'Oil Sketching On Location' and 'Atmospheric Coastal Watercolour Landscape' are available from our online Shop
